Gideon Ofori Osabutey is an environmental and energy law consultant with an interdisciplinary academic background in economics, law, and environmental governance. He holds a master’s degree in Law and Public Administration from the University of Ghana School of Law, where his scholarly paper on climate policy and legislative issues in Africa helped to solidify his expertise in environmental governance and law nexus. Additionally, he has a Master of Science degree in Climate & Sustainable Development from the University of Ghana. He is also a doctoral researcher in climate and sustainable development policies at the University of Lisbon. He is completing an LL.M degree in Energy and Environmental Law at the University of Birmingham Law School. He has received training in legal research skills from the Faculty of Law at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. He is able to navigate the South African legal system and help clients connect with relevant stakeholders of environmental conservation and energy projects in South Africa. His relevant academic foundation enables him to provide expert consultancy services in various aspects of environmental and energy law at Oaks Legal.
With an impactful tenure at GIZ, Gideon served as a Digital Transformation Advisor, supporting the organisation with its digital development and policy work in Ghana. At GIZ, Gideon served as the environment and digital transformation conduit for the Digital Transformation Center project in Ghana. He led an initiative at GIZ on digital divide research and worked in a team to establish a research partnership with Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology to inform evidence-based policy making in rural development and digital transformation affairs.
Currently a Lecturer at Ashesi University, Gideon is actively involved in working in a team to incorporate climate change education into Ashesi’s curriculum. He facilitates interdisciplinary discourses around climate change and sustainability, and teaches courses in climate and global innovations, sustainability and systems thinking at the university.
Gideon also advises the Ghana Climate Innovation Center on climate research and policy. He has advised a film agency in the UK shooting commercial ads in Africa for a multinational corporation regarding environmentally sustainable film production. His research areas include climate policies and energy transitions in Africa and digital transformation processes in urban climate governance.
Gideon is part of a community of learners and practitioners of sustainability and circular economy at the European Institute of Sustainability for Innovation (EIIS), based in Rome in Italy, where they explore sustainable agrifood systems policies and management issues around the world, in partnership with United Nation agencies like IFAD, UNIDO, World Food Program and FAO. His commitment to environmental sustainability and education is evident in his advocacy for sustainable urban forest and green infrastructure. Gideon is a member of the International Society of Sustainability Professionals. He is also a member of the Commonwealth Association of Legislative Counsel, with keen interest in sustainable development policies and legislation in Africa. With his extensive experience and depth of knowledge in sustainability and environmental matters, Gideon is a resourceful consultant working with the OAKS Legal team to deliver services to clients in the environmental and energy law areas of the Firm’s practice.
